Author of the bestselling series "Billionaire Bachelors", "Billionaire Aviators", "Becoming Elena", "Baby for the Billionaire", and "Surrender" amongst other titles.
Thank you so much for taking the time for this interview. I'm sure your readers are looking forward to hearing a bit about you as much as I am. Let's just start, shall we?
I'm sure you have been asked this question many, many times but truth be told, I'm curious. What inspired you to become an author?
It was something I did when I was young but it was also something I thought would never pan out. When I was younger I idolized authors. And to actually become one seemed far too of a stretch. But about 7 years ago I was watching an episode of Two and a Half men and Charlie said to his brother “I quit poverty.” I have replayed that a ton. I decided to quit poverty, decided to stop working meaningless jobs and took a chance on myself. It took about a year to complete the first book, but when I finally did publish, I never turned back. I am grateful every day for that decision.
What are your ambitions and goals for your writing career?
Wow. That’s a tough question. I had a goal of hitting NYT’s and have done so multiple times. Now I would love to one day see one of my books made into a movie. I can’t imagine how exciting that would actually be.
Have you got any role models in the world of literature?
Many, many role models. I love Nora Roberts, Stephen King, Brenda Jackson, and too many to count. There are such amazing creators out there that at times I still feel a bit strange when I tell people I’m an author and I put myself in the same job description of those greats. :-)
Could you please briefly explain what your "Billionaire Bachelors Series" is about?
This is the beginning of my writing career. It started with three brothers who have a meddling father who decided he’d waited long enough for grandchildren. I love when I write the scenes of the family members interacting. It’s so much fun and I use a lot of personal life experience in those chapters. The story has evolved and now Joseph, the patriarch, has been joined in the matchmaking game by his brother and friends. There are about 25 books now that all interconnect.
Thinking of Joseph Anderson, the driving character in the "Billionaire Bachelors Series", where have you drawn your inspiration for this particular protagonist from?
Joseph is a mixture of my amazing dad, my favorite uncles, and Sean Connery. I am absolutely in love with Sean Connery :-)
What are you working on at the moment? Can we look forward to a new book release soon?
You can always look forward to a new release. I love to write and am working on new books every single day. Since becoming an author, I don’t take days off. I just released Turbulent Intentions which I hope to get translated soon, and its follow up story is released in November. I’m also working on a joint project with 6 other authors called “7 Brides for 7 Brothers”. I’m doing the 3rd book in the series and my brother is Hunter who is a photojournalist who meets a very stubborn professor. I have enjoyed working on both series.
If the "Billionaire Bachelors Series" were to be filmed, which actresses and actors would you like to see playing the lead characters?
This changes depending on the year. I am so in love with many actors. For Joseph I’ve always wanted Sean Connery but since he doesn’t act anymore, maybe I’d be lucky enough to get Mark Dane. We’d have to age him though and give him a white beard, but then flashbacks of him younger would be hot, hot, hot. I would love to have Ian Summerhalder as one of the brothers. I find him sexy as heck. I’d love to have Mila Kunis as one of the wives. I would also love to have Jensen Ackles from Supernatural be Lucas Anderson. That boy is sexy as sin.
Tell me a bit about your writing schedule. Do you sit down whenever an idea hits you or have you got a structured day in which you won't call it quits as long as you haven't managed to write a certain amount of words?
I do a bit of both. I have a writing schedule on my calendar, but some days are better than others. I’ve had a 20k word writing day and I’ve had a 1k writing day. I always force myself to do something though or I fear I will lose everything sitting in my head.
How do you write? On a laptop? Typewriter? Longhand?
On a laptop for sure. I hate getting stuck in one place. Today I sat by my pool as my nieces swam and was working. If I had to be in my office all the time I would go absolutely crazy.
Where do your ideas generally come from?
I get them from living life and I get help from family and friends. We do a lot of storyboarding which I love to do. I also watch everyone around me and get great ideas there. Every moment can turn into an idea in a book.
What do you consider the hardest thing with regards to writing?
Hmm, that’s a hard one. Nighttime is hard for me. Every time I lay down ideas float through my head and I can’t sleep because then I’m afraid I’ll lose it if I don’t get up. There’s nothing truly hard. It just takes dedication and long hours.
And the easiest?
This is much easier to answer :-) The easiest part is that I can write from anywhere. I take my laptop to conferences and I can sit on my hotel balcony and write. I can go to the lake and take a break from the sun and write. I can do it in my pajamas or at Starbucks. I can do it anywhere and everywhere which makes it so awesome.
Is there one particular thing you have learned since you've started writing which still fascinates or surprises you?
That I don’t have to be pushed into a category. I can write what is coming to me in a particular moment. I am working on my contemporary romance now, but I have plans for more erotic romance, and a thriller series.
Who do you think are your biggest supporters?
My fans and my family. They have all been amazing from day one, believing in me and challenging me. I couldn’t do it without them.
What books are you reading at present?
I’ve just finished Jennifer Probst’s new story and am going to read Ruth Cardello’s next book. At the end of the month, J.S. Scott releases her newest book. I have about 1,000 books on my kindle that I need to get reading.
How do you relax in your spare time?
Puzzles. I love to do puzzles. That’s my reward when I finish a book.
A couple of weeks ago, the second book of your "Billionaire Bachelors Series", "The Billionaire's Dance", was published in German. Are you excited?
Very, very excited. I’ve been wanting to expand this market for a long time. I’ve had such a positive reaction to the first book and a lot of requests for the rest of the series. Can’t wait to hear what everyone is saying.
Do any of your books also exist in other languages than German?
Yes, which has been beyond exciting. I have books in Spanish, French and Croatian. My goal is to get them in at least 10 languages.
Will the third Billionaire Bachelors book, "The Billionaire Falls", also be available in German soon?
Yes, we’re going to complete the entire series. Just the Andersons are 12 books, then we have interconnecting books that we’ll also be doing so you can go through the lives of the Andersons and all their friends.
Is there a closing statement you would like to share with your readers?
I don’t speak any other languages so I absolutely love to pick up my books in those languages and look at them. The words are so beautiful and it’s amazing to see my work translated. I never thought this would be a place I’d be and I hope the ride never ends. I’m incredibly blessed. I can’t wait to get over to Germany for a signing and to tour the country. Thanks so much for taking time to talk with me today. I really appreciate it.
Melody, once again, thank you very much for this interview. It was a great pleasure, and I'm wishing you the best of luck for the future. I'm very much looking forward to reading more of your books!
